Rajshahi division is historically known Rampur Boalia. Present Rajshahi lies in the ancient region of Pundravardhana and according to epigraphic records at the mausoleum of Sufi saint Hazrat Shah Makhdum this city foundation dates to 1634. In medieval age, this area came to be known as Rampur Boalia and this area was the capital of Vijay Sen, the king who led military operations in Srilanka. That time Rajshahi district was a part of the Pundra region of ancient Bengal. It has a nickname called Silk City. Rajshahi division is a major urban and industrial centre of north Bengal of Bangladesh. It has a population of over 10,000000 people and it is located on the north bank of the Padma River, near the Bangladesh-India border area. Rajshahi is a prominent commercial hub of Bangladesh and is famous for its venerable silk industry. During the 18th century Dutch East India Company selected this area as a trading post and Rajshahi municipality was constituted during the British Raj in 1876.

Economy of Rajshahi

Rajshahi division is apart area of agricultural production in Bangladesh, such as rice, wheat, potatoes and lentils, Rajshahi is well known for some various crops such as Watermelons, sugarcanes, Mangoes and Lichies. This division has a great importance for industrial development but comparatively this area has not taken place to any great extent. Peoples of this division though claimed that Central Govt. has not taken enough steps to develop their region but this area is very promising to increase their national activity. No doubt there will be rapid industrial development in Rajshahi because gas has been supplied through pipeline.

Transport and tourism sector of Rajshahi

Transportation system is very good in Rajshahi. There are bus service, taxi cabs, horse-driven tomtom (special car which is drive by horse) and many three-wheeler auto rickshaw available there to move within the city. This division is very well connected through roads, air, rail and water. Through this connection this area has enough scope to make apart zone of tourism of Bangladesh. From the medieval age to present this area is dominated by many kings and many colonists from the world. For this reason there have many old and historical buildings we can find out.
