Sundarbans the royal tourist attractions of Bangladesh

South western part of Bangladesh mainly the Khulna division the face of the largest mangrove forest of the world with royal Bengal tiger, spotted deer, many kinds of birds, deadly animals and many mangrove trees. The Sundarbans is the largest single block of tidal halophytic mangrove forest in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sundarbans is one of the largest reserves for the Bengal tiger. The Bengal tiger is called the Royal Bengal tiger is the national animal of Bangladesh.

Sundarbans are named after a mangrove tree called “Sundari”. Sundari means beautiful Spanning over 10,000 sq. km. out of which 6017 sq. km. within Bangladesh territory and further extended for another 3983 sq. km. into Indian territories. Sundarbans attracts people with her natural beauty of wild life. The Sundarbans provides a unique ecosystem and a rich wild life habitat. The forest is rich in bird life with some endangered and extinct species, 333 species of plants, 400 species of fishes, 270 species of local birds, 45 species of migratory birds, 35 species of amphibians and 42 species of mammals. Biggest and wildest bees found in Sundarbans. Salty Crocodile, Deer, wild Boar, monkey, mud creeper, Fiddlers Crab, Zelly Fish, Heron, Otters, Wild Cat, etcetera are found there. Among the trees, there are Shundori, Gewa, Goran, Dhundholi, Kakra, Poshur, Jhana, Keora etc. But the most common tree is the Shundori. Shundoris cannot survive in high salinity. So they are found in the less saline regions of Mangrove forests. This grey white tree can grow almost 30 feet tall. The upper part of the leaves is deep green but underside is grey. Flowers bloom in bunches, and brown fruits grow on Shundori trees.   

The Sundarbans plays an important role in the economy of Bangladesh. The forest provides raw materials for wood based industries and paper mills. Fishing, honey collection and agriculture are the main occupation of the locals of Sundarbans.

Islands of Sundarbans
